Dr. Amon Martin Jr. Named Honorary Alumnus

The Clemson Alumni Association has honored Dr. Amon Martin Jr. of Seneca with the designation of Honorary Alumnus of Clemson University. This special recognition is reserved for unwavering supporters of Clemson whose passion for the university is undeniable, even though they never officially attended Clemson.

Dr. Martin was an Upstate native who began his love for Clemson at an early age. In the 1950’s he was employed at the Clemson House and observed first-hand the growth of Clemson University. He attended Fisk University where he graduated with a BA in 1961, and continued his education at Howard University, receiving his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1966. He also served as Lt. Colonel in the US Air Force as a dentist and as an Admission Liaison Officer for the US Air Force Academy.

Throughout his life, Dr. Martin contributed significantly to Clemson University. He served on the Board of Visitors, the Clemson University Foundation Board, and the Nursing School Advisory Board. He played a key role in recruiting diverse students and faculty, creating a welcoming environment for African American students and faculty by hosting gatherings at his home.

Dr. Martin also supported service-learning courses at Clemson, providing valuable insights into the community’s growth and challenges. He was instrumental in the development of the School of Nursing and spearheaded the establishment of the Chi Zeta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, the first historically black Greek organization at Clemson. Additionally, he is credited with being instrumental in the creation of the Emerging Scholars program, which aims to foster a college-going culture among students from economically disadvantaged areas.

Barbara N. Logan, RN, PhD, Professor Emeritus and former director of the School of Nursing at Clemson, said of Dr. Martin: “He willingly and consistently contributed and applied his expertise towards activities and initiatives designed to move the school towards achieving its goals and objectives, and towards achieving excellence. His loyalty and devotion extends to the university as a whole as he is always ready and willing to devote his time and efforts towards advancing Clemson University.”

Wil Brasington, CEO of the Clemson Alumni Association (CAA), noted: “Dr. Amon Martin exemplified the qualities of a true Clemson Alumnus. His dedication to students, faculty and his community was seen in everything he did. We are proud to call him a member of the Clemson Alumni family.”

Before his passing on December 26, 2024, the Honorary Alumnus designation was presented to Dr. Amon Martin at his home in Seneca surrounded by his family and friends by Wil Brasington, CEO of the CAA and Max Allen, Clemson Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff.

Honorary alumni are carefully selected by the Alumni Association board of directors based on their exceptional service, lifelong devotion, and unwavering loyalty to Clemson University or the Clemson Alumni Association.
