Clemson University students have selected Joseph Burgett, an assistant professor in the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities’ construction science and management department as the 2018 Alumni Master Teacher award-winner.

Burgett teaches specialized courses in the construction science and management department in HVAC, plumbing, electrical and fire protection. Burgett also lectures a master’s degree course in sustainability. This is his fifth year teaching at Clemson.

The Alumni Master Teacher award for undergraduate classroom instructio

n is given to a faculty member nominated by the student body and selected by the members

of the Student Alumni Council.

“The award is all-encompassing of how you fully engage with your students,” said 2017 winner Carter McElveen. “I know the process is very competitive.”

“I had several emotions all at once,” said Burgett. “First, I was so honored and humbled.Teaching is my craft and to receive what I think is the most prestigious teaching award at Clemson University is enormously humbling.“

Burgett received his Ph.D. in design, construction science and planning from the University of Florida in 2013. He since has served as project manager and superintendent in various projects, ranging from biomedical construction t0 hospitality campuses. Clemson is his first academic appointment.

In addition to his guidance in class, Burgett also serves as the faculty adviser for the Associated General Contractors of America student chapter and is a member of the American Institute of Constructors.

“All of our students are going to be successful when they graduate; I couldn’t stop that even if I wanted to, but I enjoy playing a small role laying the foundation for their success,” said Burgett. “They help keep life enjoyable and are a constant reminder for me to focus on what’s important.”

The Alumni Master Teacher Award is sponsored by the Clemson Alumni Association, an open-membership, nonprofit organization that exists to connect Clemson Alumni with their fellow Tigers and with their alma mater, Clemson University.
