Paula Agudelo Presented with the 2023 Outstanding Research Award

Paula Agudelo Paula Agudelo, Associate Dean for Research at Clemson and Director of the S.C. Agricultural Experiment Station, was presented with the Outstanding Research Award which is sponsored by the Clemson Alumni Association and administered by the Office of University Research Grants Committee.

Paula is a professor of plant pathology, and her research focuses on management of plant-parasitic nematodes in agricultural crops. The larger context for her work is to contribute knowledge and tactics that enhance soil health and resilience of agriculture.

Agudelo is the principal investigator for the largest single grant awarded to Clemson. The $70 million project, Building Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities in South Carolina, has 34 co-investigators from Clemson and starts this year. The five-year project will provide technical support to farmers, including small-scale and underserved producers, to adopt climate-smart production practices. The project will measure the carbon and greenhouse gas benefits associated with the practices and will support the development of markets for climate-smart commodities.

Bruce Martin Presented with the 2010 Alumni Distinguished Cooperative Extension Public Service Award

CLEMSON — The Clemson Alumni Association has recognized Bruce Martin, turfgrass pathologist at the Pee Dee Research and Education Center in Florence, with the 2010 Alumni Distinguished Cooperative Extension Public Service Award.

Martin joined the Clemson faculty in 1988 as a professor of plant pathology and physiology. He specializes in the management of diseases in turfgrass and is a nationally known expert in the field.

Martin developed a turfgrass disease diagnostic clinic at the Pee Dee Research and Education Center to better serve the golf course industry in Myrtle Beach. He conducts turfgrass disease-management training programs for extension agents, golf course superintendents and sod producers around the state, region and nation.

“Dr. Martin truly epitomizes why this award exists,” said Wil Brasington, senior director of alumni relations. “He has crafted a name for himself through both his research and his ability to effectively communicate and apply his findings for the benefit of South Carolina. He is a great representative for Clemson wherever he goes, and we are proud to have him as a member of the Clemson family.”

Martin received the Outstanding Service Award from the North Carolina Turfgrass Council in 2002, was named Outstanding Plant Pathologist by the American Phytopathological Society in 2005, was named one of the 10 most influential people in South Carolina golf by the South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel in 2005 and received the 2010 Distinguished Service award from the Carolina Golf Course Superintendents’ Association.

He received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Hendrix College in Arkansas, a master’s in plant pathology from the University of Arkansas and a Ph.D. in plant pathology from North Carolina State University.

The Alumni Distinguished Cooperative Extension Public Service Award is given annually to an extension service professional who has significantly enhanced the well-being of the citizens of South Carolina and beyond and has provided exemplary service to his or her field on behalf of Clemson University.
